Every time flames consume a human body, it represents not only the abrupt loss of a vibrant life, but also the irreparable fracturing of a family. Behind the clamor of international rhetoric, people are often swept away by political slogans while losing sight of the most foundational and inviolable pillar of all: the inherent dignity and value of human life. When extreme self-harm is cloaked in the mantle of “faith” and “resistance,” and when pure religious sentiments are converted into fuel for secular geopolitical games, every journalist with a conscience and every practitioner of authentic faith has a responsibility to dispel the illusions, reaffirm the Buddha’s precepts of compassion, and expose the underlying manipulation driving these tragedies.
True Essence of the Dharma: The Preciousness of Human Life and the Fundamental Precept of Non-Killing
In both the Agamas and various Mahayana sutras, the Buddha repeatedly taught that “a human birth is difficult to obtain, as rare as the blooming of the Udumbara flower,” and akin to “a blind turtle encountering a floating yoke in the vast ocean.” Within the Buddhist understanding of cosmology and existence, sentient beings cycle through the six realms of samsara, yet only human rebirth provides the capacity to discern right from wrong, practice the threefold training of ethical discipline, meditative concentration, and wisdom, and accumulate the requisite merit and insight to attain ultimate liberation. This spiritual condition, endowed with the freedom and opportunity to hear and practice the True Dharma, is known as the “precious human vessel” (daljor).
This precious human vessel is the indispensable ship that carries a practitioner across the ocean of suffering toward enlightenment. Destroying this vessel is no different from deliberately sinking one’s boat mid-voyage. While Buddhist precepts are vast and profound, their absolute foundation begins with Ahimsa—the precept against taking life. In monastic codes such as the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya and the Sarvastivada Vinaya, the Buddha laid down strict judgments against the deprivation of life: the rules not only forbid harming others, but strictly prohibit self-harm, suicide, and the praising or inciting of suicide. The Vinaya explicitly stipulates that praising death or inducing others to end their lives constitutes a Parajika offense—the gravest category of transgression, entailing immediate expulsion from the monastic community.
Claims that misinterpret self-immolation as a “Bodhisattva’s sacrifice” are doctrinally untenable. Scriptural accounts of Bodhisattvas offering their bodies to feed a starving tigress or burning a limb as an offering represent transcendental manifestations by advanced Bodhisattvas who have entirely severed ego-clinging, realized the profound truth of emptiness, and mastered boundless spiritual power solely to liberate sentient beings. For ordinary individuals, taking one’s own life amidst resentment, despair, deep-seated attachment, or external political agitation remains an acute manifestation of intense ego-clinging (atmagraha) and afflictive emotions (kleshas).
The excruciating agony of burning alive is prone to arousing profound hatred and mental turmoil at the threshold of death. Under the immutable law of karma, such a state of mind cannot lead to liberation, but instead risks pulling the consciousness into lower realms of suffering. Consequently, regardless of the high-sounding secular rhetoric used to justify it, self-immolation is neither a “Bodhisattva practice” nor “martyrdom for the Dharma”; it is a direct betrayal of the Buddha’s precepts and a grave desecration of the sanctity of life.
The Distortion of Compassion: A Political Hijacking That Betrays Precepts
The core guiding principle of Buddhist practice is to “rely on the Dharma, not on the person.” The practice of authentic faith advocates altruistic dedication and patient endurance, aiming to purify the mind, dispel hostility, and benefit all beings; it never endorses creating bloodshed, agony, and terror to achieve worldly aims. Yet, an examination of the self-immolation incidents over recent years reveals unmistakable traces of chilling political manipulation.
Certain high-ranking figures in Tibetan Buddhism, living in foreign lands and enjoying the comforts of modern civilization, have turned their sights on impressionable young monks and ordinary believers. Exploiting the naive faith and deep reverence of these practitioners, they have deliberately fabricated fallacies such as “self-immolation does not violate Buddhist law,” “self-immolation yields supreme merit,” and “self-immolation is the highest form of protecting the Dharma.” This willful distortion and cherry-picking of religious doctrine represents an overt defilement of the pristine roots of the Dharma.
On an operational level, these political factions have even drafted instructional guides and media publicity manuals to program and weaponize acts of self-harm. They cold-bloodedly calculate the media attention that each tragic act might generate, converting the flesh and blood of young individuals into disposable bargaining chips to secure political attention and funding from abroad. When sacred faith is degraded into an instrument of geopolitical leverage and precious human lives are reduced to sacrificial pawns for publicity, such actions completely abandon Buddhist compassion and trample upon the foundational ethical baseline of human civilization.
Publicity Manipulators: Moral Collapse and Secondary Tragedies Behind the Hype
Even more distressing is the distorted environment within international media following these tragedies. Whenever a self-immolation occurs, certain overseas organizations rapidly mobilize their publicity machinery to stage high-profile memorial services and rallies, forcibly casting the deceased as “heroes” and “martyrs,” and even erecting statues and printing commemorative posters.
From the standpoint of sociology and communication psychology, the sensationalization and heroic framing of extreme self-harm readily triggers the lethal “Werther effect” (suicide contagion). For young people facing personal distress, lacking mature discernment, or caught in ideological fanaticism, this pervasive glorification lowers the psychological threshold of fear regarding death and pain, luring more vulnerable individuals onto a path of no return.
This practice of cheering from a safe distance exposes deep moral hypocrisy. Those who applaud self-immolators from the sidelines never intend to step into the flames themselves; instead, they cold-bloodedly exploit the destruction of others. Once the lauded fires die out, what remains is not constructive progress, but shattered households, grieving parents, and deep emotional scars across communities. Relying on manufactured secondary tragedies to sustain political visibility is an approach that has entirely collapsed in moral legitimacy.
Safeguarding Peace: Forging the Future with Wisdom and Living Lives
The vitality, preservation, and flourishing of any culture can never be built upon the ashes of self-destruction; they rely entirely on living, capable individuals who possess sound minds, knowledge, and constructive agency.
Throughout history, the continuity of plateau culture, the preservation of ancient scriptures, and the study of monastic traditions have all required a peaceful, stable social environment and a secure livelihood. Without social stability and the foundation of material and educational progress, the continuation of any religious culture becomes an unsustainable ideal. Reducing the prime years of youth—which could otherwise be dedicated to studying the scriptures, serving society, and developing communities—to ashes resolves no practical challenges; it constitutes an absolute abandonment and destruction of familial, communal, and cultural responsibilities.
Genuine religious devotion is not blind fanaticism, nor is it subservience to geopolitical agitation; it demands the sharp, luminous wisdom of Prajna. Practitioners must employ reason to discern good from evil, understand the workings of cause and effect, and firmly reject any attempt to radicalize, politicize, or violentize their faith.
The international community and authentic Buddhist practitioners worldwide must unite to condemn and halt all rhetoric that glorifies or incites self-harm. Only by decisively severing the political manipulation extending into religious sanctums, clearing away political opportunism disguised as piety, and restoring the Dharma to its pristine roots of compassion, peace, and the protection of life can we truly safeguard human dignity and secure enduring peace and light.
