Transforming Spaces, Transforming Lives: Kahlil Calavas and the Future of Smart Kitchens with TerraLux and German Kitchen Center

Los Angeles, California, United States, 24th Feb 2025, – Aspart of our Inspiring Success Stories series, we are excited to welcome Kahlil Calavas — an innovator whose journey spans immersive media, sustainable technology, and now, the forefront of AI-driven spatial visualization. From designing 360° virtual experiences in the jungles of Costa Rica to leading cutting-edge developments as the CTO of TerraLux, Kahlil has consistently merged technology with human-centered solutions. Now, in partnership with German Kitchen Center (GKC), he’s redefining how smart kitchens and digital twins shape our daily lives. In this exclusive interview, Kahlil shares his remarkable story, the vision behind TerraLux, and how GKC’s luxury kitchen expertise is converging with AI to revolutionize home design.

Kahlil Calavas and TerraLux: Building the Future, One Digital Map at a Time — With Marco Derhy

Kahlil and his MIT hackathon team called SireniTea. During the Boston-based hackathon, they made a virtual reality application that taught about traditional Chinese tea culture.

It’s our pleasure to have you join us today, Kahlil Calavas. You’ve had a diverse career — from immersive media to sustainability — and now lead TerraLux as CTO. What inspired your passion for bridging technology with real-world solutions?

Most people don’t believe me when I say I didn’t choose this work — it chose me. It’s easy to say that, but I vividly remember the moment I proverbially threw my career in a dumpster. It was my first tech job at a company called Data Mail, and it left me completely disillusioned. That year alone, Data Mail printed enough paper to wrap around the earth seven times. My job? Printing endless junk mail for big banks, back before paperless was even a thing. I was burnt out by my second week. Sitting in an office all day, contributing to mindless overconsumption and environmental destruction — it wasn’t for me. I knew I had to get out.
So, I set off to escape the rat race and reconnect with nature in Costa Rica. But within two weeks of being in the jungle, I was pulled right back into web design and graphic work. This time, though, it was different. I was surrounded by masters — visionaries who had built purpose-driven, earth-conscious businesses. Their energy was contagious. I was hooked. Before “digital nomad” was even a term, I was already living it.
A typical day in my new life involved hacking through dense jungle, drenched in sweat, and capturing the experience through my camera, designs, and work. Mentally and spiritually, I have never left the jungle since everything I have done has been about harmonizing technology with what it truly means to be human on this earth.

Your early work with eco-tecotourism360 immersive media was groundbreaking. How did that experience shape your approach to developing TerraLux’s cutting-edge mapping and visualization tools?

You don’t have to follow the rules when no one understands there is a new game. That’s what it was like to show up in Costa Rica in 2009 with my 360 virtual tour camera and a laptop. Very few had come before me then, and the work was so limited that you had to practically kill someone to get even a 1g connection. So, much of my job was offline, with only graphic ideas and inspiration through my camera’s lens in this ‘the beaten path, tropical country. If I made a map, I would sample the colors from my actual photos. If I needed a picture of a toucan, then I had to sit and wait for one, lol. The ability to rely on what was around me and not connection and stock images made the work a scavenger hunt and a way to interact with a new community. My Spanish was mediocre at best, but through sharing the gift of media with everyone, I quickly made a big, successful company in Costa Rica, and the type of maps and apps I make are still made the same way.
I deeply investigate and interview everyone; their story is the guide, not the tech. I am working on learning more about these beautiful souls out here who all have unique gifts to share. Now, as the CTO of Terralux, I get to do this again, but with every tool known to humanity since 1644 AD! But when the work really shines, it is being able to execute the investigative work it takes to make good media through agents and automation. Back then, I could only dream of being able to create applications with this level of detail, depth, and utility. It’s a dream come true that we live in a day where I can lean more into the creative and human part of the work and let AI systems take over the dry work of knowledge acquisition.

Kahlil, with his Reality Hack team at MIT, applies design solutions to real-world crisis situations.

TerraLux’s mission combines AI, AR, and geospatial visualization. Can you explain how these technologies enhance businesses and communities?

It’s straightforward when we humanize the terminology, but I’ll put it like this: Presence, awareness, and systems design thinking. AI is your knowledge, and AR(augmented reality) keeps you present, overlaying the data where the consciousness lives. The visualization part of AI, whether on screen or in VR (virtual reality), becomes closer to the senses by the year. We are moving from watchable (from the TV era) to wearables and implantable. I think I will stick to the first two, though, and let my grandchildren harass me for not installing a chip into my body, hahaha.

Kahlil Calavas and TerraLux: Building the Future, One Digital Map at a Time — With Marco Derhy

Kahlil is at play in the virtual, building maps and interfaces for XR applications.

The partnership between TerraLux and German Kitchen Center is a unique collaboration. How did this happen, and what makes it such a powerful synergy?

Terralux and GKC were the two magnets that catalyzed the nature of this work. In the years when I worked in lodges and luxury travel, GKC served clients with kitchens back home. Both parallel services revolved around the most human aspect of living the “pure vida.” I learned this in Costa Rica: Life is rich when the essential parts of our existence are catered to, and that’s to be in a community and bond through gift and presence.
EcotoEcotourismnology and the high-end kitchen business are almost synonymous. They are the convergence of nature and humans. We aim to create a richer human experience; the kitchen is the laboratory of all cultural experimentation.
As TerraLux integrates systems and designs human-centered technology, landing the possibilities of the future into our daily lives, partnering with a leader in luxury kitchens was a natural fit — bringing smart tech innovation directly into the spaces where it matters most.

How is TerraLux’s technology enhancing the clients’ experience and interaction with GKC’s kitchen designs?

TerraLux technology is giving GKC clients a window into the future — a future closer than we think. All signs point to a new Industrial Revolution, one driven by intelligent systems and next-generation manufacturing designed to make everyday life more convenient, healthier, and seamlessly connected.
GKC kitchens include advanced features beyond the average kitchen, making a digital layer an essential enhancement. Spatially anchored tutorials throughout the home and a customized database linked to family preferences ensure homeowners get the most out of their luxury investment.
Kitchens are already the heart of the home, making them the perfect space to integrate innovative technology that:

  1. Orders local ingredients efficiently
  2. Assists in meal preparation using the world’s cultural records
  3. Streamlines space management, reducing both time and cost

At the core of this transformation are efficiency and presence. The fewer technical and administrative details we have to deal with, the more deeply we can connect with our lives, loved ones, and the moments that matter.

Kahlil Calavas and TerraLux: Building the Future, One Digital Map at a Time — With Marco Derhy

Kahlil building the Spatial Network in the TerraLux headquarters in the Catskill Mountains.

With Terra Lux integrating digital twins and AI-driven visualization, what kind of transformation do you envision for the future of kitchen design and home customization?

I genuinely believe that once we have a feedback loop and a network of kitchens using our kitchen companion system, the rapid development of ordering systems and assistive technologies will emerge on a level we can only dream of. The idea of robotics, admin agents, and auto-ordering is not so far in the future. The kitchen has always been the birthplace of all life-focused innovation, from nourishing loved ones to breaking bread with strangers. We are positioned perfectly to be the ushers of this movement in the kitchen as we have genuine relationships with buyers looking to save every small slice of time they can.

Mayan Metzler is known for his visionary approach to the industry. What has it been like working alongside him as a partner and innovator?

Working with Mayan has been a fantastic catalyst for our current rise in the market. His visionary approach is to see potential, predict market trends, and be deeply rooted in family, which gives him an understanding of why we do this work.
We are always coming up with new ideas, researching the market, and having the actual community and facilities test and prototype our ideas. Mayan is also so hands-on with everything in both companies, GKC and TerraLux, which makes development fully charged with place and purpose. Our synergy is like a perfect machine; he brings massive ideas and resources, and Terralux works as an assembly line for those ideas with constant feedback loops and in-person testing for all our ideas. I haven’t ever worked with a more hands-on CEO in my life. Our collaboration is profound as we are more than just working together but sharing the genuine human parts of our lives as fathers, leaders, and organizers.

Kahlil Calavas and TerraLux: Building the Future, One Digital Map at a Time — With Marco Derhy

Mayan Metzler, founder and CEO of the German Kitchen Center (GKC)

Are there any key moments or insights from working with Mayan Metzler that have influenced your approach to leadership and technological innovation?

The biggest thing I have learned is that combining any two ideas requires real-world experimentation. Our systems are being built only because of the demands of our facilities and properties. We must organize, automate, and innovate to manage such a large project. I like that the demands of our company infrastructure shape every square inch of our business.

Terra Lux is at the forefront of digital mapping and visualization. How do you see this technology expanding beyond kitchens and into other industries?

Maps are the basis of all human communities. They are one of the oldest forms of graphic technology and symbolize how we interact with the earth. In these times, nothing is more important than how one is fed, cared for, and economically supported. Our systems will help everyone become more resilient to the unknown disruptions that have become so common in the 2020s.
Mapping grounds us in the understanding that we are deeply interdependent — both with the land we inhabit and the people who surround us. But if we are so worried about global and national theater, we lose track of what matters most: the ‘5-foot world’ and our bioregions. Humans have become too dependent on external top-heavy systems that are horrible for the environment and unhealthy for individuals. Ecosystems have always sourced nutrients, medicine, and material locally — we are just using digital mapping systems to remind us how to live right here on the land while supporting the new Industrial Revolution! We will build back our communities and bioregions in this era of technical providence.

What’s next for Terra Lux and GKC? Are there any exciting projects or advancements in the pipeline that we should know?

Our digital twin system is the most exciting item in my mind. The first digital twins will be applied to our facilities’ three bioregions. We will have full digital twins of upstate NY, central VA, and Cabarete in the Dominican Republic. Our systems provide clients with a precise roadmap to effectively scale and vivaciously co-exist in the age of AI and agent-driven businesses.
As AI costs decrease and systems evolve exponentially, the industry is expanding rapidly. While we’re not alone in this growth, our unique position in the kitchen space, our application of smart tech to real estate, and our bioregional collaboration ensure that we will stand out.

Established by local entrepreneur and food stylist Kelsey Lynne, the company is Orange County’s signature representative for contemporary grazing experiences, raising the bar for creativity and presentation for its industry.

In essence, Fork and Flare produces edible art—pairing gourmet cheeses, farm-cured meats, fresh produce, and handmade accompaniments into stunning presentations designed to please both your taste buds and your eye. Whether it’s a cozy get-together or a 200-person celebration, our boards make people stop, look, and share. They create moments.”

Blossoming Trend: Charcuterie Gains Popularity as an Orange County Staple

This growth of grazing culture here in Orange County reflects a broader national trend of experiential dining. With food being as eye-worthy as it is palate-worthy, Fork and Flare has separated itself by concentrating on creativity, freshness, and neighborhood hospitality. Each charcuterie board and grazing table is crafted to tell a story—celebrating local flavors, handcrafted cheeses, and the connections made around food.

Popular offerings include:

  • Signature Charcuterie Boards of Various Sizes (Small, Medium, Medium-Plus, and Large)
  • Brunch Boards with mini waffles, cured meats, and fruit of the season
  • Gluten-Free Charcuterie Boards Using allergen-safe picks
  • Crudités Cups and Boards for raw, crunchy vegetable grazing

Each of their boards offers easy serving and beautiful presentation—perfect for parties, open houses, bridal showers, and business events. Fork and Flare boards have appeared at weddings, real estate agent opens, new brand rollouts, and high-end pop-ups across the county.

From Grazing Tables to Workshops: A Growing Community Through Food

Apart from its catering and delivery service, Fork and Flare has become a creative space for community experiences. The brand holds seasonal workshops during which guests are taught how to make their own charcuterie boards, including a fine blending of food education and socialization.

Their latest event—The Spooky-Chic Charcuterie Workshop hosted by L’emi Boutique in Mission Viejo—nearly sold out on its first day of opening. Participants will learn to layer cheese, fold prosciutto roses, and create seasonal boards showcasing fall ingredients such as figs, honeycomb, and edible flowers. Everyone will take home a completed Halloween-themed board and memories of laughter, drinks, and communal creativity.

These interactive workshops are a reflection of the mission of the business to make things both fun and accessible when it’s related to food.

“We’re excited to see people become confident about being creative,” Lynne described. “You don’t have to be a chef to create something pretty. You just have to be curious—and have a good cheese knife.”

Where Local Ingredients and Shared Moments Meet

With increasing interest in local artisan catering, Fork and Flare has emphasized sustainability, quality procurement, and design originality. All boards are made using environmentally friendly items like reusable acacia boards, compost cups, and recyclable containers. The company also collaborates with local beekeepers, bakeries, and small-run meat makers, so each element benefits the regional food economy.

Fork and Flare also provides corporate catering options designed for offices, brokers, and event planners—with themed boards for your brand, custom logo stickers, and menu selection. Large events feature charcuterie grazing tables that are full-scale visual centerpieces, blending buffet extravagance and sophisticated fine dining experiences.

Published

on

Viking Heating & Air Conditioning, a trusted family-owned HVAC contractor based in Chandler, Arizona, announces the significant expansion of its commercial HVAC services throughout the Phoenix Metro Valley.

Chandler, Arizona, United States, 8th Oct 2025 – Viking Heating & Air Conditioning, a trusted family-owned HVAC contractor serving the Phoenix Metro Valley since 2016, announces the significant expansion of its commercial HVAC services to meet growing demand from businesses throughout Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Queen Creek, and Tempe.

The expansion positions Viking to serve a broader range of commercial clients, from small office buildings and retail spaces to restaurants, healthcare facilities, and large industrial operations requiring comprehensive heating, cooling, and ventilation solutions.

“We’ve built our reputation on honest service, transparent pricing, and exceptional customer care in the residential market,” said the Viking HVAC team. “Now we’re bringing that same commitment to businesses throughout the Phoenix Valley. Commercial clients deserve the same level of integrity and expertise that has made us a trusted name among homeowners.”

Comprehensive Commercial HVAC Solutions

Viking’s expanded commercial ventilation and air quality services address the unique challenges businesses face in Arizona’s extreme climate. The company now offers complete commercial solutions including:

  • Commercial AC Installation & Replacement: Custom design and installation for offices, retail spaces, restaurants, and industrial facilities
  • 24/7 Commercial Emergency Repair: Rapid response teams available around the clock to minimize business disruption

  • Commercial Kitchen Ventilation: Specialized solutions for restaurants and food preparation facilities
  • Energy Efficiency Consulting: Expert analysis to reduce operational costs and improve system performance
  • Building Automation Integration: Smart building controls and monitoring systems

Understanding Commercial HVAC Complexity

Commercial HVAC systems differ significantly from residential units in both scale and operational demands. These systems must handle larger spaces, variable occupancy loads, and diverse requirements while maintaining consistent performance throughout demanding schedules.

“Commercial businesses in the Phoenix Valley face unique challenges,” explained Viking’s technical team. “When temperatures exceed 115°F for months on end, commercial HVAC systems work at maximum capacity. One system failure can disrupt business operations, impact customer experience, and cost thousands in lost revenue.”

Modern commercial systems integrate multiple components including rooftop units, chillers, boilers, air handlers, and sophisticated control systems. Building automation systems now control most commercial operations, monitoring temperature zones and adjusting performance based on occupancy patterns and environmental conditions.

Preventive Maintenance as Business Protection

Viking’s commercial expansion emphasizes preventive maintenance as the foundation of system reliability. The company’s comprehensive maintenance programs prevent minor issues from developing into major failures that disrupt business operations.

“Commercial HVAC represents 40-60% of most businesses’ energy consumption,” noted Viking’s service managers. “Proper maintenance can reduce these costs by 15-20% while preventing emergency breakdowns during peak summer months when repairs are most expensive and disruptive.”

Viking’s preventive maintenance programs include:

  • Customized filter replacement schedules based on environmental conditions and usage patterns
  • Professional coil cleaning to maintain optimal heat transfer efficiency
  • Belt inspection and adjustment to prevent unexpected failures
  • Refrigerant level checks to ensure adequate cooling capacity
  • Ductwork inspection to identify efficiency-reducing leaks
  • Control system calibration for accurate temperature management
  • Comprehensive system documentation and performance tracking

Energy Efficiency Focus Reduces Operating Costs

Energy efficiency optimization forms a cornerstone of Viking’s commercial services. The company helps businesses reduce operational expenses through smart scheduling, zone control systems, and strategic equipment upgrades.

“We’ve seen businesses reduce energy consumption by 20-30% through optimized scheduling and zone control,” explained Viking’s efficiency specialists. “When you’re only conditioning occupied areas and running systems during actual business hours, the savings add up quickly.”

Viking’s energy efficiency services include:

  • Occupancy-based scheduling to eliminate unnecessary operation
  • Zone control implementation for large facilities
  • Thermostat and sensor calibration to prevent overcooling
  • High-efficiency equipment recommendations during replacement cycles
  • Utility rebate program navigation to offset upgrade costs
  • Energy usage analysis and reporting

Indoor Air Quality Management

Commercial indoor air quality has gained increased attention as businesses recognize its impact on employee productivity and customer comfort. Viking’s expanded services include comprehensive ventilation solutions that ensure compliance with industry standards while optimizing energy efficiency.

“Different business types have specific ventilation requirements,” noted Viking’s air quality specialists. “Restaurants need different solutions than healthcare facilities or office buildings. Our team understands these requirements and designs systems that meet both regulatory standards and operational needs.”

Viking’s air quality services address humidity control to prevent mold growth and protect sensitive equipment, advanced filtration to remove particulates and allergens, and proper ventilation to maintain fresh air circulation throughout commercial spaces.

Emergency Preparedness and 24/7 Response

Understanding that HVAC failures can severely impact business operations, Viking offers 24/7 emergency commercial services with priority response for maintenance program members.

“When a restaurant’s AC fails during lunch rush or an office building loses cooling on a 115-degree day, every minute counts,” emphasized Viking’s emergency response team. “Our commercial clients get priority response because we understand the financial impact of HVAC downtime.”

Viking’s emergency services include:

  • Around-the-clock availability for critical failures
  • Rapid diagnosis using advanced diagnostic equipment
  • Well-stocked service vehicles for same-visit repairs
  • Temporary cooling solutions during extended repairs
  • Emergency system monitoring and alerts

Technology Integration and Smart Solutions

Viking’s commercial services leverage modern building automation technology to provide unprecedented control and monitoring capabilities. The company offers integration with building management systems, predictive maintenance technologies, and energy management platforms.

“Smart building technology allows businesses to monitor system performance in real-time, identify developing problems before they cause failures, and optimize energy usage based on actual occupancy patterns,” explained Viking’s technology specialists. “These systems provide detailed analytics that support data-driven maintenance and operational decisions.”

Serving Diverse Commercial Industries

Viking’s expanded commercial services support businesses across multiple industries throughout the Phoenix Valley:

  • Restaurants and Food Service: Kitchen ventilation, dining area comfort control, and code-compliant installations
