Hawaiian Korean War Veteran William Castro Shares Untold Stories of Young Soldiers
William Castro’s Korean War memoir, From Paradise to Hell, recounts the experiences of young Hawaiian soldiers who left island life for the front lines in Korea, preserving a personal history of friendship, courage, sacrifice and survival.
United States, 9th Sep 2026 – At eighteen years old, William Castro left the Big Island of Hawaii with a group of young men who had grown up surrounded by the ocean, family, and the traditions of island life. Within months, they would find themselves fighting on the frozen mountains of Korea.

That journey is at the heart of Castro’s new memoir, From Paradise to Hell: Tales of a Group of Boys Who Became Men and One A Giant Under Fire, a firsthand account of friendship, military service, sacrifice, and survival during the Korean War.
When the Korean War erupted in 1950, the conflict quickly became personal for communities across Hawaii as casualties from Hawaii’s own military units began returning home. Castro and other young men from across the islands made the decision to enlist and serve. Most were teenagers, and some had barely begun adulthood.
Among them was Leroy Kauhini, a seventeen-year-old from Oahu whose story becomes one of the book’s most powerful threads. Too young to sign his own enlistment papers, Leroy needed his mother’s permission before joining the group.
Together, the young recruits traveled from Hawaii to Japan and eventually into South Korea, where the war they had heard about in newspapers and on the radio became a terrifying reality. Castro recalls arriving in a country devastated by conflict and encountering civilians fleeing the fighting before being sent toward the front.
The young soldiers were eventually assigned to the 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, and introduced to the harsh realities of frontline combat.
Among the most dramatic episodes in the memoir is the battle for Hill 717, where Castro witnesses Leroy Kauhini advancing through intense enemy fire. The battle becomes a defining moment – not only in the war, but in Castro’s understanding of the courage and character of the young men beside him.
Yet From Paradise to Hell is more than a chronicle of battles.
Castro brings readers inside the lives of the men behind the uniforms – their jokes, fears, friendships, memories of Hawaii, and the bond that developed between soldiers who had entered the Army as boys. Humor becomes a means of surviving the unimaginable, while memories of home provide an emotional counterpoint to the violence surrounding them.
The book ultimately asks readers to look beyond military statistics and historical timelines and remember the young people who lived through them.
“This is the story of the boys who went to war,” Castro writes – not simply as soldiers, but as sons, cousins, friends, and brothers whose lives were permanently changed by their service.
The memoir is dedicated to the young men who volunteered and traveled with Castro to South Korea on January 1, 1951, as well as to the men and boys from Hawaii who answered the call to duty and made the ultimate sacrifice.
With From Paradise to Hell, Castro preserves a personal chapter of Korean War history and gives readers an opportunity to experience the conflict through the eyes of the young Hawaiian soldiers who lived it.

Hydraulic Hose Failures Put Cost of Machinery Downtime in Focus
A failed hydraulic hose can bring valuable machinery to a standstill, prompting Completely Hydraulic to highlight the growing importance of mobile repair support across London and the South East.
Essex, United Kingdom, 9th Sep 2026 – For a construction company, warehouse operator or industrial business, the failure of a relatively small hydraulic hose can have consequences far greater than the cost of the component itself.

An excavator can stop digging. A loading machine can become unusable. Access equipment can be immobilised. Work can slow or stop while a business waits for the machinery to be repaired.
It is a problem Completely Hydraulic has been dealing with for more than two decades, and one that has helped shape the company’s mobile approach to hydraulic breakdowns across London and the South East.
Instead of automatically requiring failed hydraulic equipment to be transported to a workshop, the company sends hydraulic engineers directly to construction sites, warehouses, industrial premises and other locations where machinery has broken down.
Its emergency hydraulic hose repair operation is designed around a simple principle: when an essential machine has stopped working, taking the repair capability to the machine can be the most practical way of helping a customer get moving again.
Hydraulic hoses operate under demanding conditions and can fail through age-related deterioration, abrasion, damaged fittings, heat or excessive movement. Although a failed hose may appear to be a relatively straightforward component failure, its position within a hydraulic system means the effect on the machine can be immediate.
For businesses working to schedules, deadlines or production targets, the resulting downtime can quickly become more significant than the original repair.
Daren Partridge, spokesperson for Completely Hydraulic, said: “When a hydraulic hose fails, the hose itself is often only a small part of the customer’s problem. What really matters to them is that a machine has stopped, people may be waiting and a job isn’t getting done.
“That is why mobile hydraulic engineering is so important. If we can take an experienced engineer and the appropriate repair capability to the equipment, we have a much better opportunity to help the customer deal with the breakdown without unnecessary delay.”
Completely Hydraulic’s engineers can assess a hose failure at the customer’s location, identify the hose and fittings required and, where circumstances allow, manufacture and install a replacement hydraulic hose assembly.
The engineer can also consider what may have contributed to the failure. Abrasion against another component, unsuitable routing, deterioration or damage around fittings can sometimes provide useful clues as to why a hose has failed.
This wider engineering capability has become increasingly important as construction, industrial and logistics businesses continue to rely on hydraulically operated machinery.
Construction plant, excavators, cranes, piling equipment, access machinery, loading equipment and industrial systems are among the many applications where hydraulic failure can have an immediate operational impact.
Completely Hydraulic has been operating since 2004 and today supports customers through locations serving London, Essex, Kent and the Heathrow area, including operations in Dagenham, Harlow, Belvedere and Hayes.
The company’s mobile hydraulic engineering service is supported by its workshop and trade counter operations, allowing Completely Hydraulic to deal with requirements extending beyond an individual hose failure.
These include hydraulic hose assemblies, pumps, valves, manifolds, power packs, accumulators, diagnostics, oil filtration and flushing, preventative maintenance and hydraulic ram and cylinder repairs.
Partridge believes the value of an emergency hydraulic service ultimately comes down to understanding what a breakdown means to the customer.
“Nobody plans for a hose to fail in the middle of a working day,” he said. “The customer wants to know that there is somebody they can call who understands hydraulic equipment and can come to them.
“After more than 20 years in hydraulics, keeping machinery moving remains at the heart of what we do.”
With businesses across construction, transport, manufacturing, warehousing and infrastructure continuing to depend heavily on hydraulic equipment, Completely Hydraulic says mobile engineering will remain a central part of its operation throughout London and the South East.
