Therrian Fontenot Highlights the Role of Discipline After Professional Sports
-
Former NFL player reflects on how routines built through football continue to shape life beyond competition.
Tampa, FL, Oct 09, 2026, ZEX PR WIRE — Former professional football player Therrian Fontenot is drawing attention to the role that discipline and routine can play long after an athletic career ends.
Fontenot spent much of his early life focused on football. Born in Louisiana and later raised in Los Angeles, he attended Leuzinger High School before earning a full athletic scholarship to Fresno State. He later left college early to pursue professional football and went on to play in the NFL.
While his playing career eventually came to an end, Fontenot says many of the habits built through football remained useful well beyond the sport itself.
Structure Beyond the Game
Competitive football requires athletes to follow strict schedules, maintain physical conditioning, prepare consistently, and respond quickly to setbacks. Those habits can become part of an athlete’s daily life long before they reach the professional level.
For Fontenot, that structure did not disappear when football ended. He has continued to prioritise fitness through regular workouts and weight lifting, while also taking up golf as another way to stay active and challenge himself.
The setting may be different, but the mindset remains familiar. Improvement still comes from repetition, attention to detail, and the willingness to keep working when progress feels slow.
Learning to Adjust Without Losing Momentum
Leaving professional sports can create a major change in routine. Athletes often move from highly structured environments into a stage of life where they are responsible for creating that structure themselves.
Fontenot has approached that transition by keeping some of the habits that worked during his playing years while allowing his goals to change.
Rather than trying to recreate the same competitive environment, he has focused on maintaining consistency in areas that support his health, focus, and personal development.
That approach reflects one of the lasting lessons of athletics: discipline does not always need a scoreboard to remain valuable.
A Different Definition of Progress
Football offers clear measurements of performance, from wins and losses to playing time and statistics. Life after sports can be less straightforward.
For Fontenot, progress now looks different. It may mean staying committed to a training routine, improving at golf, learning from new experiences, or simply maintaining the habits that help create focus and balance.
The goals have changed, but the process still depends on consistency.
Fontenot’s experience shows how an athletic background can continue influencing daily life even after the competitive chapter has closed. The lessons developed through years of training can remain useful in entirely different settings, particularly when discipline becomes something a person maintains for themselves rather than for a team or season.

Joshua Bird: Applying Engineering Principles to Plant Reliability
Looking at Manufacturing Through an Engineer’s Eyes
Pennsylvania, USA, Oct 09, 2026, ZEX PR WIRE — Most people do not think much about the equipment behind a manufacturing process when everything is working as it should. That is part of what makes reliability so important. When machines operate consistently, production can continue without unnecessary interruptions, and the people responsible for keeping things moving can focus on the work in front of them.
For Joshua Bird, plant engineering is about understanding what keeps those systems working and recognizing opportunities to make them better. His experience at 3M has included work in production, maintenance, and plant engineering, giving him a broad perspective on the relationship between equipment, people, and daily operations.
The work is often less about one dramatic solution and more about making thoughtful improvements over time. Equipment needs to be maintained, problems need to be investigated, and decisions need to account for both immediate needs and longer-term reliability.
Reliability Starts Before Something Breaks
One of the most important principles in plant engineering is that waiting for equipment to fail is rarely the best strategy. Preventive maintenance, regular inspections, planning, and attention to warning signs can help identify potential problems before they become larger disruptions.
Bird’s background in aviation has reinforced that way of thinking.
Before moving into manufacturing and engineering, Bird spent years in military aviation, including serving as a KC-10 Aircraft Commander and Instructor Pilot and later as a U-2 Mission Pilot. Aviation taught him that preparation is not something to think about only when circumstances become difficult. It has to be built into the way you operate from the beginning.
That lesson translates naturally to engineering. Whether the system is an aircraft or a piece of manufacturing equipment, understanding how it works is an important part of recognizing when something is not working the way it should.
For Bird, reliability is therefore not simply about fixing equipment after a failure. It is about understanding the system well enough to anticipate problems, evaluate risks, and make informed decisions.
Applying Aviation Lessons to Engineering
The transition from military aviation to manufacturing gave Bird an opportunity to apply familiar principles in a different environment.
An aircraft requires detailed planning, communication, technical knowledge, and disciplined procedures. Manufacturing presents different challenges, but many of the underlying principles remain relevant. Equipment has to perform as expected, people have to communicate effectively, and decisions often need to be made with incomplete information.
Bird’s engineering work has included maintenance planning, capital projects, equipment reliability, and operational problem-solving. Those responsibilities require both technical understanding and the ability to work with people who approach a problem from different perspectives.
His aviation background also reinforced the importance of staying calm when something does not go according to plan. A good engineer, like a good pilot, cannot afford to become so focused on the problem that they lose sight of the larger situation. The goal is to understand what is happening, determine what can be controlled, and take the next productive step.
The Value of Small Improvements
Not every engineering improvement has to be dramatic to be meaningful.
A change to a maintenance process, an equipment upgrade, a better approach to planning, or a solution to a recurring problem can make a difference over time. Manufacturing environments are complex, and improvements often come from understanding those systems in greater detail rather than searching for one universal answer.
Bird’s approach to professional growth follows a similar philosophy. He believes in setting larger goals, breaking them into achievable steps, measuring progress, and adjusting when circumstances change.
That mindset has served him across very different parts of his career. The equipment may change. The environment may change. The responsibilities may change. The underlying need to prepare, evaluate, communicate, and keep learning does not.
Engineering as a Form of Leadership
Plant engineering is also a people-focused profession.
Technical knowledge matters, but solving problems in a manufacturing environment often requires collaboration across different roles. Engineers, operators, maintenance professionals, supervisors, and other team members may each see a problem differently.
Bird’s leadership experience has taught him the importance of listening to those perspectives. He believes some of the strongest professional relationships are built through dependability and respect. People need to know that when something important needs to get done, they can count on the person working alongside them.
That philosophy extends beyond his professional life. Bird has described success as more than reaching a particular title or professional milestone. For him, it also means being someone others can trust, supporting the people around him, and leaving teams and organizations better than he found them.
Carrying the Lessons Forward
Bird’s career has given him experience in two fields that might appear very different at first glance. Military aviation demanded precision, preparation, and sound decision-making. Engineering has required him to apply those same qualities to manufacturing, equipment, and operational challenges.
Today, his work at 3M represents another chapter in that continuing development. He remains interested in aviation, engineering, leadership, and learning, while continuing to pursue his long-term goal of becoming a legacy airline pilot.
For Bird, reliability is ultimately about more than keeping a machine running. It is about developing the knowledge, preparation, and habits that allow people to perform well when it matters. That is a lesson he has carried from the cockpit into engineering and one he expects to carry into whatever comes next.
