Before moving into manufacturing and engineering, Bird spent years in military aviation, including serving as a KC-10 Aircraft Commander and Instructor Pilot and later as a U-2 Mission Pilot. That lesson translates naturally to engineering. Whether the system is an aircraft or a piece of manufacturing equipment, understanding how it works is an important part of recognizing when something is not working the way it should.

For Bird, reliability is therefore not simply about fixing equipment after a failure. It is about understanding the system well enough to anticipate problems, evaluate risks, and make informed decisions.

Applying Aviation Lessons to Engineering

The transition from military aviation to manufacturing gave Bird an opportunity to apply familiar principles in a different environment.

An aircraft requires detailed planning, communication, technical knowledge, and disciplined procedures. Manufacturing presents different challenges, but many of the underlying principles remain relevant. Equipment has to perform as expected, people have to communicate effectively, and decisions often need to be made with incomplete information.

Bird’s engineering work has included maintenance planning, capital projects, equipment reliability, and operational problem-solving. Those responsibilities require both technical understanding and the ability to work with people who approach a problem from different perspectives.

His aviation background also reinforced the importance of staying calm when something does not go according to plan. A good engineer, like a good pilot, cannot afford to become so focused on the problem that they lose sight of the larger situation. The goal is to understand what is happening, determine what can be controlled, and take the next productive step.

Not every engineering improvement has to be dramatic to be meaningful.

That philosophy extends beyond his professional life. Bird has described success as more than reaching a particular title or professional milestone.
